At Dig A Little Deeper, ADHD therapy is not simply “regular therapy with ADHD clients.”

Our clinicians specific training and experience in adapting proven psychotherapies for the cognitive, emotional and relational patterns associated with ADHD.

We work with children, teens and adults to improve emotional regulation, executive functioning, relationships and self-understanding.

Why ADHD Brains Require Personalized Treatment

A woman in a red and black patterned dress looks thoughtfully upwards, her index finger on her chin. Surrounded by question marks on a gradient gray backdrop, she ponders conversations families need to have about ADHD, reflecting the journey toward understanding and acceptance.

ADHD is one of the most misunderstood conditions in mental health.

Many people spend years in therapy without meaningful progress because their ADHD was never recognized or therapy was not adapted to the way ADHD brains process information.

Even in therapy, ADHD affects:

  • attention and working memory,
  • emotional regulation,
  • motivation and reward systems,
  • time perception and planning,
  • self-concept and identity,

Traditional psychotherapy models assume consistent attention, working memory and follow-through. ADHD often disrupts these processes.

Without adaptation, therapy can feel frustrating, ineffective and often, invalidating.

Research consistently shows that psychotherapy can improve coping, emotional regulation and functioning in ADHD, particularly when it is adapted to ADHD-specific challenges.

What Is meant by 'ADHD-Adapted Psychotherapy'?

procrastination

ADHD-adapted psychotherapy modifies traditional therapy models to work with the cognitive profile of ADHD rather than against it.

It includes adjustments in:

Session Structure
  • shorter conceptual segments
  • visual or written scaffolding
  • clear takeaways at the end of sessions
  • externalizing tasks and planning
  • reducing working-memory load
  • building accountability systems
  • identifying emotional overwhelm quickly
  • addressing rejection sensitivity
  • learning regulation strategies that work in real time
  • understanding the ADHD nervous system
  • separating identity from symptoms
  • developing self-compassion and realistic expectations

Without these adaptations, even evidence-based therapies like CBT may not work well for ADHD clients.

Dig a Little Deeper has been leading  psychotherapy training and implementation of adaptions – neuro-inclusive therapy – since 2015.

ADHD and Common Co-Occurring Conditions

ADHD-adapted psychotherapy addresses the interaction between ADHD and these conditions. Your treatment plan at Dig a Little Deeper includes all co-ocurring conditions, rather than addressing them in isolation.

Many people with ADHD also experience other mental health challenges.

Some of these Common co-occurring conditions include:

Anxiety disorders

Depression

Complex and childhood trauma, PTSD

Substance use challenges

Sleep difficulties

Autism, and other neurodivergent conditions like aphantasia, or alexithymia
